What is an ultrasound?

Ultrasound scanners consist of a console containing a computer and electronics, a video display screen and a transducer that is used to scan the body and blood vessels.

How will this test help in the management and treatment of your IBD?

Assess disease extent and anatomical location within the bowel; it may also useful in the detection of small bowel strictures.

What’s involved?

  • You will be instructed to lie down on a flat firm table that is positioned next to the ultrasound machine and a computer monitor
  • A clear gel will be rubbed onto the surface of your skin to help the transducer make direct contact with the skin
  • The transducer will be run over your skin until clear images are obtained

Length of procedure

The ultrasound examination is usually completed within 30 minutes.
